You get up early, you come home late, day after day. You are sat in traffic on the way to work and coming home. What is it for? If only you could escape, but we have commitments, people we love and depend on us, so we trudge on regardless, because that is what we do. We spend time with strangers, rather than the people we love, it is just the way it is, but when things are bad at work, just remember why you do what you do. I think that sums up the reason that I wrote this song

Verse One
I’m up with the dawn, I feel too sleepy to face the morning.
The radio’s on, the traffic’s bad, the cars are crawling.
I wish I was home, with you all alone, having some fun.

Chorus
It’s for you oh honey, my thoughts they always stray.
Being with you oh honey,
you know just how to keep me smiling.
You’re the best thing that could have happened to me.

Verse Two
I’m watching the clock, just 15 minute until my dinner.
I’d give up the lot, to be with you but I’m not in credit.
I wish I was home, with you all alone, having some fun.

Chorus
It’s for you oh honey, my thoughts they always stray.
Being with you oh honey,
you know just how to keep me smiling.
You’re the best thing that could have happened to me.

RECORDING NOTES

The song was written on the same day that I wrote Angels, so creatively I had a good day. Both songs focus on isolation but where Angels is about being alone and wishing that life would end and that maybe there is a better place in heaven, this song is just about the frustration of not being with the one they love. The song was recorded on a Tascam 8 track and has a very different feel to Angels, with a bright electric piano as the main instrument. Looking back on what may have influenced this song I think it may have been the theme tune from a TV show called Taxi, I think that the recording of this song owes a little bit to that show and American TV shows of that period.
