I wrote this song when I was 20 years old. It was my first song and when I performed it, I always thought that it didn’t fit in with the Rock’n Roll/ punk/new wave/anything. It is an innocent song from the heart and yet it is so apart from our current times.

When you are young and in today’s frame naive. Although I was naive by even the standards of the day when I wrote it. I was scared and lacked self-confidence. To be honest not a lot has changed, I am just aware of it and try to bolster and put on a bravado in the hope that no one will notice.

In my heart I want to give the world to the one that I love, but it is not in my power. I cannot take the love of my life to an island of sand and palms and even if I could, we are chained by our responsibilities to others.

I am a very selfish person, I know. I could blame it on my upbringing as that is a good way to deflect. But when you love someone you find that despite whatever you would do as an individual, you find that you cannot do because of love. That maybe pathetic, you can always run away. But if you find someone who brings out the best of you, makes you feel complete then maybe you must do what conflicts your personality and do what is right.

One of my favorite songwriters was John Lennon and I think that his song “Love” says it all.

Verse 1
Let me see, what can I do to impress you?
What can I do, to make you understand?
Let me see, how can I show you
that my feelings are real? I love you so.

Verse 2
Will you be, my lover my sweetheart?
Can I be, your only one?
I would give the world, if I had it to offer,
but all I have is my love for you.

Chorus
There’s a wall between us that’s too high to climb
and I’m left in the cold while you make up your mind,
whether you love me, whether you care.
Well I’ll bring flowers to your doorstep, I’ll always be true,
I know I’m nothing special, but I’m deep in love with you
and I’ve got to know, so let your feelings show.

Verse 3
Can’t you see how much I love you?
Can’t you see how much I care?
Open up to me and give me your answer,
all I have is my love for you.

Chorus
There’s a wall between us that’s too high to climb
and I’m left in the cold while you make up your mind,
whether you love me, whether you care.
Well I’ll bring flowers to your doorstep, I’ll always be true,
I know I’m nothing special, but I’m deep in love with you
and I’ve got to know, so let your feelings show,
and just a smile from you would make me feel alright.
